Metal maniacs, rejoice! The Thrasher returns to present to you: SOLINARIS, signed via Cimmerian Shade Records, hailing from Canadian grounds...performing Progressive Death Metal on their debut album entitled, "Deranged".
Prog comes to haunt me yet again; in my time as a reviewer, I have been acquainted with an abundance amount of quintets that, while I can appreciate the genre, I still have a hard time enjoying and understanding the sub-genre ultimately. What I like about the sub-genre is how, with the quartet in question, SOLINARIS implements a multitude of instrumental indifferences that sound pleasant and most definitely unprecedented, especially for Progressive Death Metal. Delivering proggy weirdness, while mixing it up with Tech-Death and other immense variations, the band unleash their 1st album since formation in 2012; fast forward 5 years later and the band are ready and have finally released "Deranged", which was released on April 8th, 2016. Featuring 10 songs ranging at around 49:27, I am baffled, yet unsurprisingly revered, by this level of intricate musicianship.
"Deranged" consists of an interesting lineup featuring a substantial magnitude of members including mastermind, Eric Labrie on vocals/keyboards, who has integrated clean singing with deep gutturals here and there that do interesting leaps back and forth; the most atmospheric portion is the full time Saxophonist, Alexandra Lacasse; this is where the Prog values come in, as each member has their own distinctive pattern that unifies this band into a Tech-Death mountain of aggressive madness. The second mastermind is Bernerd Giroux, who elements more coherent proficiencies with his acoustic prowess, filled with complex dexterities. Jean-Daniel Villeneuve on guitars, associates his weapon with efficient riffs that fulfill enlightening jams. The powerhouse of Lucas Biron on drums and Jonathan Piché on bass, have amalgamate adroitness within the production...however...
...My problem leads to how uncoordinated the instrumentation sounds; now, I know this is how Prog/Tech operates...but for someone who relishes the formula of rhythmic musicianship, SOLINARIS don't seem to have that and feels dysrhythmia, I try and try to keep an open mind about Prog/Tech, as they work, but only to an extent. Nonetheless, the "Intro" begins the atmospheric leap with a kind of GORGUTS imagining.
The titular track, "Deranged", unveils dissonant blast beats of Death Metal, enlisting galloping leaps of ballsy intrigues that eventually compose into a jazzy fret-work of sorts to make things sound inventive as possible. "Torture Chronicles", "Blind" & "Murder" evidently showcase that SOLINARIS want to include as many genres in this band as possible. Albeit, Heavy, Thrash, Death, and so on, yet making it sound inspiringly interesting with Prog-Rock incentives. "Chloroform", "Field Of Trees" & "November" has intriguing aspects from country sounding melodies, to catchy jazz-grooves. "Phobopath" is a delightful switch for the "Tech" initiative, taking a weird turn into "Red Rain", which completes the album elegantly. With the dysrhythmia complaints out of the way, I can safely say that the band have invented themselves a strong and solid debut, but where awareness is due, it naturally won't be for everyone.<
