Soldier - Dogs Of War album cover

SOLDIER is a classic New Wave of British Heavy Metal band from Northampton. Their album "Dogs of War" came out on the 30th August 2013. It is an impressive work of metal. The actual sound of the record is following in the footsteps of the giants such as JUDAS PRIEST with gigantic harmonies that send shivers down your spine.

This album is clearly influenced by old school NWOBHM bands, suggested by the title trick "Dogs of War" which is a SAXON cover. The songs have fast guitar progression and pounding drums in the background giving the music a much heavier edge. Some of the melodies and hooks are so catchy; however, that it adds a popish tone to the music sometimes. As a result, the music is fun and colourful. The best songs on the record are definitely "Fireflies," "Forever," "I can't breathe" all of which have dramatic chorus's that are memorable.

Of course, SOLDIER play in a sub genre that is known for having strong imagery. Soldier's artwork for Dogs of War is eye capturing. The image features a monstrous figure next to intimidating looking dogs and hooded figure in the distance. The background they have chosen is comparable to classic visions of hell. Fundamentally the art gives the reader an impression of conflict and threat, or war! The style of the art work is also awesome. It is a totally animated design with bold, shiny covers as well as a pristine outline that makes the image more captivating. The logo is pretty bad as too, with the letters drawn as though they are flames.

It was so nice to hear a classic sounding record. With most bands in the metal world all trying to be extreme it's refreshing to see a band write music that's a little more classic and simple but just as exciting. SOLDIER did a really good job with this. It's everything a metal album should be, something with clever imagery, tight song structure and dramatic vocals. This album is recommended to anyone who loves the New Wave of British Heavy Metal genre and is particularly a fan of the records from 1980s, but also wants to hear a new spin on things.
