Sodor - Evil Thrash Metal album cover

SODOR hail from the warm climates of Fortaleza, capital of the state of Ceará, Brazil. Googling images of this place, shows images of stunning beaches, beautiful blue skies and, well, more stunning beaches. Nothing evil about this place, apparently according to Google.

With their debut demo, "Evil Thrash Metal", SODOR are in stark contrast to what their hometown offers. This demo is evil, ugly and probably a little bit immature, but sometimes, immature is good. SODOR are clearly influenced by bands like POSSESSED, early SLAYER and of course SEPULTURA and if this had been released back in the day along with the aforementioned bands' releases, I would be mentioning them in the same breath as those bands.

SODOR set the tone for the demo with opener "Brutal Matança", translated as "Brutal Killing". Vocalist Jeff Mosh lets rip his best Tom Araya scream, as guitars and drums thrash behind him. Now I don't have any idea what he is singing about but a good guess would be about death and killing, maybe in the name of metal? "Caçada Metal" has a sweet opening riff that morphs into a SEPULTURA-esque groove, which I would've loved them to at least stay a little longer with, but SODOR have other ideas and proceed to thrash like their lives depended on it. I would just like to say I really, really love the production on this demo so far."Possuído Pelo Mal" and "Pronto Para Matar" are up next, and these are a real treat, a real kick to the balls. These two songs sound beefed up, more in your face, and there is no change up to a groove, it's just straight ahead evil thrash metal. You can hear the bass more audibly on these , and the vocalist sounds possessed, the demo just keeps getting better just as it's about to finish.

The last track, "Executor", sounds as if it is a live rehearsal take. The vocalist sounds a bit too far back in the mix, however would be a strong finish if recorded in the same demo session as the other tracks. I will be honest and say that the first couple of listens I gave to the demo, my opinions were not along the same lines as the one I am writing now. I am glad I gave this another chance, because it is a very strong debut release from SODOR and I look forward to hearing from them in the future.
