So Hideous - None but a Pure Heart can Sing album cover

From their EPK, "absolutely thrilling on a musical level, absolutely cathartic on an emotional level, "None but a Pure Heart can Sing" is an example of the triumph of art created with open minds and open hearts. Discussing the concepts behind the album, Brandon Cruz states: "The record is about rediscovering the freedom to share your passion, whether it be your art or your own voice, without any angst, anger or second thoughts." The album contains five tracks.

"Souvenir (Echo)" leads off the album. It opens with ominous and harrowing tones, complete with screams. From there it forays into some charming piano and meaty bass guitar notes, before returning to the madness of the previous sound. "The Emerald Pearl" begins with slow, clean and melancholy tones. Strings and brass join in as the song picks up. Sax joins in as the song takes on a rhythmic groove, with the drummer keeping the tempo quite well. "Intermezzo (3)" opens with a slower, distorted sound, and some strong melodies. It segues into a dialed back sound, with clean guitars and piano. Emotions run high with those beautiful violin strings.

"Motorik Visage" brings the intensity back to the table with big, ominous notes, like the world is ending around you and it's every man for himself. The strings bear a hasty quality to the music. The intense passages grate on your senses but aren't without their own bits of melody. Closing in towards the ending, the sounds shifts again and carries a new set of emotions. "From Now (Til the Time We're Still)" is a very pretty four-minute closer. Beginning with what sounds like a renewal, or a catharsis for your soul, it gives you hope for the future. You slowly crawl out of the black hole you were sent to and begin to look into the light, and all the things that are beautiful about the world. Even the screams shrink into the background, overtaken by the promising tones of the guitars. It ends on a trio of strings.

This album is as intense as it is lovely, and the guest musicians really round out the line-up nicely. It's quite hard to categorize, as they band explores a few musical styles without concern for convention and rules. The band also knows how and when to use melody. This highly original sound was quite pleasing to listen to. The album cover is unassuming, but as they say, don't judge a book by its cover.
