SLUDGE huh? No, don't be confused. I had the exact same thoughts you have while seeing the band's name. Just to let you know, these guys have nothing to do with the dirty little noise we call Sludge. So, what would you say for something a bit heavier and more modern than Sludge? Follow me lads...
The Swiss metallers SLUDGE are mostly known for the participation of a well known musician. For you who still haven't understood what I am saying, the band's guitarist Makro is the guitarist that SAMAEL have been using since 2004. What about his own steps? What does he do when he is away from SAMAEL?
He produces aggressive Thrash/Death Metal with his mates in SLUDGE! With a sound that sometimes reminds you of Death Metal bands like ABORTED and ROTTEN SOUND (mostly due to their sound), as well as groovier bands like ENTOMBED and CATHEDRAL due to their Doom Metal influences, SLUDGE deliver an all out doomy Thrash/Death Metal attack with a heavy as fuck sound that will make some people lay their eyes on them. The fact is that despite their nice blend of different genres and the more than great production they have managed to have, they lack this something that could make them special.
I don't know why but I just listened to this album without seeing something so unique or amazing that could make me start digging into this band. Lava is definitely a good album with some great tunes and modern aggression that will satisfy fans of the 21st century's Metal scene, but I think that these guys can do way better. They are talented musicians and they show it in ever opportunity they have.
