Slavedriver - Marauders Of The Wasteland album cover

New Zealand's Metal collective, while relatively small, is surprisingly eclectic. Hailing from Auckland are Grinders SLAVEDRIVER, who fuse the most profusely brutal genres imaginable into their first EP, "Marauders of the Wasteland". In typical Power violence fashion, the majority of the tracks are little over a minute long, each providing a uniquely ferocious, violent outrage of Grind-fuelled Metal.

"Omens" begins with a drowning, irrevocably heavy dirge of riffs that are immediately thrust into crashing wall of Grind. Immediately noticeable as a highlight of this release is the recording quality, a trait not often sought-after in the genre. Ahmed's vocal delivery is top notch, between the spectrums of grunting and shrieking that is both followable and vicious. "Marauders" is a ferocious, short-and-not-so-sweet delivery of the more extreme variations of Thrash, combined with eerie atmospherics that reminds me a little of old SKELETONWITCH.

"Of Marrow and Hate", for a few moments, was a nostalgic, gory trip back to the older releases in CARCASS' discography with pulverising and particularly chaotic riffs that are woven in with evocative, Doom-like passages. "Synaxis of a Pariah" somewhat carries on the Doom motif, at times backed with a subtle groove in the riffs that is often and suddenly forgone for a brutal, Thrashy approach; definitely one of the more complex arrangements on the record.

Interestingly, this band defies the stereotypes of Grind and the related, often-ridiculous sub-genres by incorporating meaningful atmospherics and riff arrangements, combined with a stellar vocal delivery and fair accessible recording quality.
