Black Marrow
Slaughtersun
It's a rare occasion when an album truly catches you off guard. In a world where extreme metal often feels like a never-ending cycle of reinvention, with each band tweaking an existing formula rather than forging something new, SLAUGHTERSUN manages to sound genuinely refreshing. At first glance, "Black Marrow" presents itself as a technical death metal record. However, as the album progresses, moments arise where you can’t help but wonder what that unusual sound is. Not being particularly fond of keyboards, I was surprised to find myself enjoying what seemed like an electronic melody. Upon deeper investigation, I was even more astonished; there were no keyboards, and shockingly, no guitars either.
Instead, the band employs an unconventional approach, utilizing bass strings alongside what they call treble strings delivered through an electric violin. If there were ever an instrument you’d least expect to find in death metal, a violin would likely top the list. Yet, here it is, seamlessly integrated into the sonic assault of SLAUGHTERSUN. This remastered edition of "Black Marrow" is a relentless 23-minute EP that delivers one banger after another. From the dissonant chaos of "Fall of the Firmament" to the progressive nuances of "Ready Cell Awaits", the record displays a wide range of influences around a death metal core. Oriental melodies intertwine with odd time signatures, while blast beats collide with relentless double bass drum patterns, creating a soundscape as unpredictable as it is punishing. Visually, the album cover is nothing short of a masterpiece, perfectly capturing the dark atmospheres evoked by the music. Colours of doom and gloom, scattered skulls, and a landscape ravaged by destruction paint an image that mirrors the album’s apocalyptic essence. It’s a fitting visual companion to an already unearthly experience.
Sonically, the production is spot on. Every instrument serves its purpose with precision, in a perfect balance of chaos and harmony. The result is a memorable album, leaving a lasting impression long after the final note fades.
