Skyforest - A New Dawn album cover

From their Facebook page, SKYFOREST is a Melancholic Metal project from Podolsk, Russia. The first ideas and recordings were made in 2013, but the project was ready to surface only in early 2014. The music continues to expand the ideas left in his previous project, ANNORKOTH, and basically it's a continuation of it under the new name - SKYFOREST. The project will be featuring session members until he will be capable to make everything on his own. "A New Dawn" contains six tracks.

"Along the Waves" opens the album, with soft and pretty clean guitars that drip with melancholy. The vocals are whispered at first, drawing you into their world slowly. When those Black Metal vocals come in, they mix so well with the depressing melodies in the guitars, with some symphonic elements to boot. "The Night is no More" opens with soft drums and atmospheric elements. The vocals start again and whispers and you feel a sense of peace settling in. There is beauty in the darkness. The vocal harmonies shine brightly here. It picks up towards the end with layers of despondent tones and you think the world is about to end.

"Heart of the Forest" opens with the sounds of the night, along with acoustical guitars and strings in a medley of the sublime. It's so beautiful that your heart aches when you take it in, including all of the melancholy tones. "Rebirth" opens softly with strings and then some guitar leads. The rhythm is slow and steady, really allowing that melody to develop. The harmonized vocals reach heights of the highest mountain peak, soaring effortlessly. "Wanderer" features a harder riff out of the gates, along with some symphonic elements. The whispered vocals allow the song to flow naturally, with some bright moments of melody. It builds in layers, leaving you completely exasperated by the end.

"Scattered Ashes" closes the album. It has a slow and grinding pace, with depressive tones. The clean guitar interlude is amazing...so simple yet so memorable. When the sound returns with full force it is absolutely stalwart in its delivery. This was a very unique album, falling somewhere in between the cold and depressive tones of atmospheric Black Metal and those melancholy tones of Gothic Metal. But, the melodies presented are just so beautiful that you can call it whatever you want, just call me a fan. A shout out to the clean vocalist as well...Michael brings so much emotion to the music. Bravo!
