The mix between Metal tendencies with Punk Rock elements isn't a new feature at all, and wasn't born in the 80's. MOTÖRHEAD is the pioneer of the whole thing, and ATOMKRAFT made important contributions to what things would be in the 80's, and that is being done today as well. But in Canada, bands with vibe into what some label as Metal Punk seems to not follow the tendency to fit in the 80's model, doing things in the own way. And SKUMSTRIKE shows it, as can be heard clearly on "Deadly Intrusions", their latest release.

It's obvious that the Metal Punk essence is pulsing on their music, embodied by a Black/Speed Metal form. But even crude and organic, the band isn't trying to remake what was already done, but choses to bring something different, as the use of 90's Black Metal elements in some moments, but always keeping the hooking elements of Metal. It's full of energy and aggressiveness, and what lovely nasty hooks can be found on their songs. The band hired Patrick McDowall to take care of the recordings and mixing, and Enormous Door to the mastering. The sensation is that the band recorded things as they were on a rehearsal due the organic feeling that the album bears, but things are defined and set in a way that allows the fans to understand what they're playing without problems.

Old School or not, one can chose the best way to call it. But no one can deny the value of moments as "Caustic Poison" (a fast and simple song, with a massive energy coming from the guitar riffs), "Blood Red Vision" (the speed decreases a little, but the hooks and aggressiveness are the same as in the previous song, and what bone crushing work of bass guitar and drums), "Panic Obsession" (a typical Metal Punk song with simple technique and hooks inherited from Punk Rock, and the snarls and shrieks of the vocals), "Another Shot of Fear" (the aggressiveness and speed increases, and what energy comes from this song), "Mental Wound Submission" (another song with tempos that aren't extremely fast, boosting the hooks and putting the guitars in evidence), and "The Infestor". And their version for POISON IDEA's "Nothing is Final" is really very good.
