A Kingdom Aflame
Siren
SIREN is a Blackened Doom Metal band based out of Cincinnati, Ohio, United States.. In 2013, the band received a Cincinnati Entertainment Award nomination in the "Metal" category. This is the band's debut album and contains eight tracks.
"Fire and Blood" is the opening song. It has an unassuming doomy sounding entrance, before picking up sound in the Black Metal style. The vocal style varies from clean, harmonic singing to the traditional Black metal short screams. "Into the Starless Night" begins in a similar manner, though the song is a bit longer. It seems they like to establish that downtrodden feeling before hitting you with the Black Metal elements. Still, they are able to work in some traditional melodic elements as well, especially with the chord progressions in this number. Sometimes I get an AMORPHIS vibe while hearing this song. "Ursine Lineage" has a little more kick from the start. The evil sounding main riff really drives the feeling of Doom home in this one. There is also a more distinct chorus and a nice change of pace sort of interlude that carries the track to fade out. I like the approach taken in "And the Skies Mourned her Light." It's a soft instrumental with just enough presence to register. Sometimes these pieces are common in this type of music, just to establish some more feeling of hopelessness and despair to the overall album. "Hiraeth" by contrast is much more bossy, almost like an anthem of sorts. The vocal style is once again varied. The clean vocals give it an almost regal quality, and the Black vocals more aggressiveness. "The Devil Rides Out" sounds exactly as it is entitled, with the chugging rhythm akin to the galloping rhythm of a horse. Combined with the particularly fierce Black metal vocals in the chorus, this piece is strong. Closing the album is the title track, "A Kingdom Aflame." I think this is the most complete song on the album. The sound is fuller and they do a nice job of combining a few different elements and structures into the overall song.
In summary, I find the genre description to be very fitting. The pervasive sound is Doom but the Black Metal elements add some depth to the songs. My only constructive criticism would be that I don't quite hear the amount of "meat" or thickness that I want; a little more would have brought some real depth and fullness to the album as a whole.
