Sin Starlett - Solid Source of Steel album cover

It's time to explain something: when a writer complains about a band playing an Old School Metal genre it's not linked in an opposition of playing in such way. No, one band can play even 60's Rock 'n' Roll and things can work in pretty good way, but the musicians must understand that we're not in the past anymore, so you must put of yourself into the music you're playing. And doing such a thing, the band is able to refresh a genre that time eroded long ago. With this in mind, the work of the Swiss quintet SIN STARLETT can be understood, and anyone can deal with "Solid Source of Steel", their latest release.

They're just playing what can be said as NWOBHM format: the weight of Heavy Metal with the melodies of 70's Hard Rock and the energy unleashed by JUDAS PRIEST and MOTÖRHEAD (both bands are deeply important to NWOBHM), but in a way that is personal. Of course they're not reinventing anything, and are just playing what they want with energy and honesty, creating something that's really good. The weak spot of the album: the sonority. It's obvious that the quintet tried to make things in an organic form using the modern technologies, and it's a wise way to deal with things. But the problem resides on the instrumental tunes used that could be better (once more: the word 'better' doesn't mean 'modern tunes'). It's good and can be understood, but could be better.

The album really will have a deep crush on the fans from old forms of Heavy Metal, especially due songs as "Solid Source of Steel" (a massive and melodic energy flows from this one, based on excellent guitar riffs), "Rule or Obey" (the contrasts between cleaner and introspective moments with heavier parts is always a fine choice, and shows the strength of the bass guitar and drums' parts), "Straight and Ready" (that have an accessible appeal on its melodies, and inheritance of Hard Rock), "Struck Down" (where the greasy influences of AC/DC are clear for the ears, and the vocals are fitting in a good way on the abrasive instrumental layers), and the energy of "Waves of Hamartia". Yes, they're not original, but their work is really very good.

SIN STARLETT is really a heavy worker in Metal, and "Solid Source of Steel" shows a band ready to explode in the Old School Metal scene. Just listen and taste their work.
