Silverburn - Self Induced Transcendental Annihilation album cover

SILVERBURN is the solo project of James 'Jimbob' Isaac. The Welsh metal visionary began this journey during the cruel lockdown winter of 2020. It has been said that extreme conditions demand extreme responses, and "Self-Induced Transcendental Annihilation" began as an elemental response to the almighty global gut-punch that surrounded its creation. The album has eight songs.

"Annihilation" is the first. It two minutes of chugging, heavy, and angry music, and a sort of cross between Hardcore and Extreme Metal. Some of the more sterile elements are quite stark. "Formless Atomization of Omniscient Particulate" has a similar sound that is depressing at time and absolutely raging at other times. Many of the riffs are cold slices of a sharp blade, cutting through flesh, tissue, and bone. "Vita Potentia Amimus" has a similar sound again. Although the music is brutal and punishing, we aren't getting a lot of variation so far. "Pain Body (Torn From Auric Field)" is a short, three-minute blast of chaos and anger.

"Simulacreality" has a similar sound and pace again, although some of the riffs are more dissonant. When a vocalist sings in the same range over and over again, the music can grow stale pretty fast. "The Unrelenting Will of Boundless Immortality" might as well be a continuation of the previous song. At this point in the album, you can settle on the fact that you are not going to get any surprises. "Etheric Crush" is a much longer offering, with at least some variation finally. Overly hopeless tones take over, and do indeed crush your soul, making you believe there is nothing good in this world.

"Bathe in Fire" closes the album. We get at least some variation here, as the riffs are extremely dissonant, and you get some creativity and prowess from the composition. Overall, although the album went deep into Hell at times, there just wasn't enough variation from song to song to keep things interesting. The bottom line is that artists have to work hard on this...I understand...but it' essential.
