Silver Knife - Unyielding/Unseeing album cover

On August 19, 2020, SILVER KNIFE released their debut album "Unyielding/Unseeing." SILVER KNIFE was formed in 2019 and is comprised of members from Belgium, the Netherlands, and France. Though the members are nameless for now, they have shared that they are in the bands CULT OF ERINYES, HYPOTHERMIA, LASTER, and NUSQUAMA. According to them, the sound of SILVER KNIFE simultaneously is similar and different to these bands. "Unyielding/Unseeing" aims to convey themes of alienation and conflict, themes that are all too familiar in the current moment.

SILVER KNIFE is a black metal band of the atmospheric and post variety. The characteristic tremolo picking riffs are a constant wall of sound. Shifting through different chords within tracks gives that wall of sound dimension. Through this, there is a wide range of emotions conveyed through the music. The mastering for "Unyielding/Unseeing" was done by MARE COGNITUM's Jake Buczarski. If you're familiar with MARE COGNITUM, then the production of "Unyielding/Unseeing" will also be familiar. It's not clean production, so everything seems to be coming through a haze, which suits the music because it adds to the dream-like quality and hypnotic sound.

"Unyielding" is a strong introduction to the band and their music. It starts off harsh with a scream and that fuzzy, raw production. However, it quickly becomes cathartic waves of black metal riffs.
Much of the album goes on this way, just with different riffs, though always emotionally weighty. There are a few moments that stand out. On "This Numinous Loom," what stands out is the guitar solo of sorts in the latter half. Stripping back the layers helps to keep the album interesting. With atmospheric and post-black metal, the music can become repetitive quite easily. "Unseeing" is the calmest track on the album, though no less melancholic. Again, it also helps to keep the album interesting by changing up the pace and tone. After it ends, you're ready for the waves of emotion in the last two tracks.

Overall, I recommend SILVER KNIFE's debut album "Unyielding/Unseeing." Fans of atmospheric and post-black metal a bit of a raw production should check out this album. While I would not say that the album is unique in its genre, it is still enjoyable. It takes the listener through all the shades of despair, anger, and sadness.
