The band SILVER HORSES is a project started by Italian guitar player Gianluca Galli and singer Tony Martin from BLACK SABBATH fame. The Anglo-Italian band released 2 albums in 2012 and 2017 and then Tony Martin left the band and was replaced by Jacopo Jack Meille from TYGERS OF PANG TANG fame. With the new line up plus Andrea Castelli on bass and Matteo Bona Bonini on drums, the band is releasing Electric Omega via Bad Reputation Record. This 13 track album starts with “Looking So Good” and I can tell you ladies and gentleman, it is good rock. All the ingredients are there and well mixed. The tune is catchy and full of guitar solos in the background. Good start.
We follow with “Bags Of Bones” and you notice this band is composed of well rounded musicians and composers as the riffs and melodies are creative and digestible. Jacopo Jack Meille is a good singer that gives me Glen Hughes vibes at some points. We get a little more bluesy with “Endless Circle” that is another good track and I believe the proposal of the band is a sound more like BLACK COUNTRY COMMUNION as it is reminding me of one of their guitar riffs. One thing I would like to point out is the nice bass sound and arrangements by bass player Andrea Castelli that pops out in the mix and does not always follow the guitar riff as you can see in “Hafa Cafe”, and the excellent “The Big Vibe” that has complete LED ZEPPELIN vibes and another great vocal performance. Bass shines again with “Black Hawk Dawn” but this time with the competent drumming of Matteo Bona Bonini. The arrangements are just good heavy rock with a lot of blues and nice melodies with memorable choruses.
Another spicy guitar riff starts “Family Man” and this one takes me back to the 70’s. Guitar player Gianluca Galli has all the riffs on his fingers and his wah wah solos complements the setting perfectly. It did not take too long to reach the semi romantic acoustic tune mixes with some heavier parts on “Somewhere Sometimes”. I usually do not like pop romantic rock but I have to confess this one is quite digestible and has a nice acoustic guitar solo. Another ZEP inspired tune starts on “Sandcake” to be suddenly mixed with Disco (!) a few seconds later. And it worked! The band is not afraid to take risks and this one has a killer bass line. We follow with the bluesier “Trapped In The Woods” that again reminds me of Glen Hughes' voice. The band surely drinks from the fountain of DEEP PURPLE as well and the guitar solo in this one is one to behold. Hard to define the best of the album so far with so many good tunes. However, I am sure it will not be “The Grand Design” that is the other romantic of the album, and to my earbuds, the most commercial friendly one.
We get closer to the end with “My Lady In Red” that in my opinion did not add much to the table. It is a nice tune but weaker than some others in this album. An album that is well produced and mixed as you can hear all the instruments clearly. We reach the end of our journey with the different “Time And Space” that has some interesting keyboard arrangements and a killer solo that does not combine much with the singing melody in my opinion. Overall a good work despite a few more commercial than necessary songs. Creative output that sometimes reminds you of the greats , and sometimes it does not.
