Dormant
Silent Skies
From their EPK, "SILENT SKIES' third offering is melancholic and calming, yet effervescent and incandescent, expanding the duo's sonic universe in every direction - it is the result of brave sonic experimentation married to the tastefully artistic aesthetic that defines the group. Throughout the varied peaks and valleys of their compositions, it is their powers of expression, and reflection on the human experience - in their own words, "conversations with life, about life" - that give their music the power to speak to a vast array of lived experiences, and reach people with diverse tastes, as long as they are interested in appreciating art as a reflection of life itself." The album has ten songs, plus a bonus cover of "The Trooper."
"Construct" is the first track. At first, it seems fairly innocuous, with a light dose of keyboards and vocals. But take a listen as layers are added slowly, and before you know it, you are on a collision course with fate. The crescendo towards the end is breathtaking, and this is how the duo makes the best use of their emotions. "New Life" is a bit more mysterious. It sounds like they are wrestling with parts of their past that are keeping them from moving forward. No line hits harder for me than the final one..."remember that the dark is a construction of our hoping." "Churches" takes me back to when I was young...I didn't realize at the time that the struggle of belief in God would be so hard later in life. The music is gorgeous...and how can something this pretty not be the result of a higher being? That's the way I look at it now.
"Just Above the Clouds" took more than one listen for me to really understand. It's hope for better days. The sound is tender and sweet, and again, the crescendo of sound at the end it where it all comes together, with beautiful vocal harmonies. "Reset" is an enigmatic button a lot of us would like to push. But the real work in life is not resetting things, but working hard to become a better person. Still, the question lingers, "what will come of us?" "Tides" is about the ebb and flow of life. Just when things seem overwhelming, the tide will always come in again. Tom's vocals are very touching and Vikram's piano work is elegant. You can feel the emotion as the music comes to life and the tide swells, only to retreat again. "The Real Me" in many ways is nothing like the duo has done before. Electronic elements sway with a groove that is emotive and catchy. It has that 80's throwback vibe to a time when you were immersed in music, yet the sound is modern.
"Light Up the Dark" is about finding that special partner who understands you without having to say a word. When you find someone like that, you hang onto them, forever. If those strings in the song don't tug on your heart, nothing will. "Dormant" has a lush and poignant keyboard sound. All of the part that were obscured before are filled in, with a light that is so bright, it's hard to look at. "The Last on Earth" closes the album. It's a story of personal resilience, and growth, but still leaves some questions, as good music always does. Then, we come to "The Trooper." Their take on this classic is emotional, personal, and even somewhat dark. But the end result is beautiful.
For me, the album is mostly about things that we all experience every day...the doubts, the fears, the inhumanity of humanity. But it's also about the hopes, dreams, and celebrations. Life would be very hard if we could not dream of better things. But on a deeper analysis, there is so much more. Usually, I find that there is a standout musician on an album, but Tom's vocals and Vikram's piano and keyboards just work so well together. Tom is the yin to Vikram's yang. They expanded their sound and took off into uncharted territories, throwing some caution to the wind, and the result is spectacular. This is their best album yet.
