Psychedelic Horror
Sign of Evil
SIGN OF EVIL is Camilo Pierattini (INVOCATION SPELLS and DEKAPITATED) also known as Witchfucker, who plays all instruments and provides all vocals for the Chilean project. He released his debut demo/EP, "Psychedelic Horror," in February 2020. The act is billed as Black/Speed Metal, which aptly captures the essence of the music. With just six tracks and clocking out one second over 12 minutes, the album is a blitz of extreme Metal.
The songs are tied together by similar bass lines as well as synth intros and outros on several tracks. There is a bit of a Punk undertow conveyed by a stomping, frenetic rhythm. The riffs are discordant flats and sharps, and the vocals are raw and guttural. Lyrically, I have no idea what the songs are about, but by the song titles I would guess the existential horror of being. Production wise, we're talking Black Metal greyscape. If you are looking for sonorous Doom or melodic Black Metal, this probably isn't your stop. Pierattini seems to be exploring a psychedelia-fused evocation, as the album title would suggest. The songs drip of Hammer Horror spurred by a frenzied urgency. These bursts are periodically paused with short syth interludes which accent the dins that have just ended and forebear the ones to come.
My favorite track is "Death Crew," the final and longest song on the EP (keeping in mind that three of the six songs are under two minutes, and none extend past two and a half). I enjoyed several of the theatrical flourishes like the violin tremolos and creepy spoken word narratives in some language I don't understand (which, admittedly, could be anything other than English). There is also some interesting keyboard action that sounds like an out of tune piano or harpsichord. All these elements compound to make the EP markedly disturbing and discordant, which I'm pretty sure is the point.
Altogether, "Psychedelic Horror" is a curious piece of extreme metal exploring a unified theme of Nosferatu inspired horror. If that's your thing, you're likely to love this EP. Either way, it is worth the listen.
