Shyyne - Go Your Own Way album cover

SHYYNE hails from the "spiritual home of Hard Rock" Wolverhampton UK. They initially started in 2012 and going off of their Facebook profile, "Go Your Own Way" is their debut studio album after 8 years of being a live band. This group of Hard Rockers aims to pay homage to 1980's Hair Metal bands such as FASTER PUSSYCAT. I'm admittedly not getting that platform shoes and studded vests vibe after listening to this album.

"Say Goodbye" is a rather cynical opening track lyrically. The vocals remind me of DIRE STRAITS with the more short, almost spoken singing style. "Movin On" and "Feeling Fine" definitely has a more Melodic Hard Rock feel with tempo and just overall how the songs flow. The latter song title is about as exciting as these songs are... Fine. Not too much stands out musically. "Broken Down Girl" reminds me of a song that would play during a "driving down an open highway in a convertible" scene in a 90s movie. Yet, the lyrics are quite darker than the melody portrays, so it's kind of a weird song to listen closely to. "Go Your Own Way" was intended to be a motivational song, I think anyway but it deflated like a hole in an inflatable pool. "Show Me" has a slight Blues feel at the beginning, but there's this super awkward attempted scat (doo wah be bop) portion that I couldn't even listen all the way through. What kind of music is this supposed to be again? "Take Me Down" and "State of Mind" were both pretty hard to get through. The vocal melodies aren't catchy, and, at times, are slightly irritating. I found myself unable to focus on the rest of the music beyond the solos because of it truth be told. "Friday Nite" is a rather forgettable track about partying on a Friday night. The solo, once again, is the saving grace of the song. "Shut Up" was definitely a sleazy track, more in the Sleaze Metal wheelhouse than some of the other songs.

All and all, this album was hard to listen to. It started out okay, and does have some decent moments. I really disliked the vocals though; I'm not much of a fan of the almost speaking but not type of singing, yet it was front and center in every single song. Truth be told, I was also expecting this album to be Hair/Glam Metal, so I had anticipated some charming cheesy melodies and catchy hooks. While there was a moment that I'd catch that 'leather and cheap booze' vibe, it was overall repetitive or just fell flat on the delivery aspect. The guitar solos were pretty good, they were about the only indicator that they were going for the 80s Sleaze Metal vibe. It wasn't quite enough to keep my interest while listening to this redundant and slightly grating album unfortunately.
