Even before getting down to listen to this new EP by Canadian Thrash band SHOTGUN CURE, there is an organised chaotic feel to the album cover art which tempts you to make guesses about the style of music on offer here. The pre-assumptions that I had even before listening to the album almost came true as the music itself is fast paced, chaotic and weird in a lot of ways. While the band does call itself a Thrash Metal band, there are lots of Progressive and Groovy effects in this record.
With only 4 songs on offer, the EP starts off with the title track "Swarm" which is chaotic all throughout the song and in a lot of ways even exhibits characteristics of Brutal Death Metal song with the only noticeable difference being a much cleaner and snarl vocals. "Our Altered Remains" is more welcoming as it starts off with a mid tempo thick guitar solo before going on full all out, but this song is more easy on the ears as its more technical and the snarling vocals of Harut Savchenko allow the listener to comprehend more of the lyrics of offer here. The riffs are groovy and later the impressive solos take over the song in its later half. The bass and the drums too are fast paced and elevate that progressive feel of the album. Even with the mixed feeling, so far so good.
"Cutting Vigor" goes on the same tempo and almost has similar riffs that doesn't have much new to offer to the listener. While it isn't a bad song by any means, the band goes into a safety mode with this song unable to bring anything new musically. "Impassion" is much better song, bringing in new riffs and is a great finish to an interesting EP. The production is modern and polished and works fine for a modern Thrash band like SHOTGUN CURE. The continuous mid tempo riffage along with the mid tempo vocals is what differentiates SHOTGUN CURE with its contemporaries and work just fine, though there is a lot of room for improvement, but is worth your 18:38 minutes if you're game for something new even in any of the aforementioned genres.
