None Shall Prevail
Shodan
"None Shall Prevail" is the third full-length album from the Polish progressive death metal band, SHODAN. Their Bandcamp page describes the album in this way: "Third opus „None Shall Prevail", 40 minutes of a punishing progressive death metal with twists towards cold wave aesthetics. The band's most mature, well-produced, and straight-to-the-point record to date with a unique style that crystallized on a wide spectrum of metal genres. Produced by renowned producer Arkadiusz „Malta" Malczewski (BEHEMOTH, DECAPITATED) and mastered by Kohlekeller Studios."
The album opener, "Tamed In Unison," has excellent guitar work. This is especially evident with the slow, clean playing interspersed with bursts of fury. Inglot's vocals are standard death metal low growls. While this track adequately introduces the overall sound of the album. When compared to the rest of the album's output, it is rather unremarkable. "None Shall Prevail" begins to hit its stride with "Ethos." This track begins with Sadlak playing a fat bass line and Jarosz going wild on the cymbals. Inglot's vocals are fast and aggressive. His chugging guitar licks are another high point. "Ethos" has a simple but effective chorus. It consists of Jarosz singing the track's title, followed by an instrumental part. Also, this track features a bold ending, a staple on this album.
Following "Ethos," is "Starting Back At The Abyss." This one has some of the best riffs on the album. The lead guitar solos are also killer. Everything comes together nicely. The vocals are engaging, especially the backing vocals in the chorus. Towards the end, the song slows with some down-tuned clean guitar notes, then builds back up to full intensity. "Lords" is a borderline filler track at two and a half minutes. They make nice use of reverb and different vocal styles, but there isn't enough to focus on before the song's abrupt end. It comes off as undercooked and frivolous.
"Nighttime Violators" is the best track on "None Shall Prevail." It is also the most dynamic. From the "blech" sounds to the disgusting grunts, it is also thoroughly steeped in death metal traditions. This track also has clean and distorted guitar passages with a hefty amount of chugging. Everything that makes the previous tracks great is present in spades. Overall, "None Shall Prevail" is intense and enjoyable. "Lords" is the album's only misstep and that's simply because it is comparatively too short to make an impact. The term "Shodan" refers to a first-degree black belt. I feel like it's about time that this band got a promotion. This album is black belt-level progressive death metal.
