The Fuckening
Severed Headshop
Even to extreme Metal genres, one feature must be clear in the music bands create: the fun it can bring. Yes, because music has to be fun in any way to create the link between fans and band. And even some bands that prefer to work on traditional (or classic, as you wish) trends must have this aspect in mind. And on the North American quartet SEVERED HEADSHOP shows it on their latest release, the EP "The Fuckening" (even its name is fun).
They work on a traditional form that blends Death Metal with Grindcore, but some extreme elements that were created after the rise of the Second Wave of Death Metal can be detected into their music (as the extremely fast blast beats and technical care on the rhythms), but for the fans of the genre, this album is a mined field of hooks: when you're not expecting, you're hooked by their energy. It's extreme, but really and easy release to fall in love with. The sonority was conceived to bring their musical work to the best they could. It reminds an updated version of the model used on Morrisound Studios, keeping the songs brutal, aggressive and nasty, but allowing the fans to understand the expressions of the band.
"Statutory Fate" is a brutal and nasty song with many Death Metal hooks, with excellent guitar riffs (even some influences of Thrash Metal can be clearly heard on them) and contrasts between grunts and screams. On "Self Gorification" (pay attention to the title) the band uses a harsh and extremely noisy approach, and a massacre is unleashed on bass guitar and drums (some rhythmic arrangements are excellent). Both "Soul Excavation" and "Eternal Soul Penetration" present to the fans an excellent technical approach, with a massive weight, and what very good vocals again. And "...and the Night Was Dark as Fuck" brings some unexpected technical arrangements on its beginning (a melancholic feeling is presented), but soon explodes in brutality and fast tempos, with a great work on bass guitar and drums.
"The Fuckening" is the kind of release that makes people ask why in the blazes SEVERED HEADSHOP didn't release an album until this moment.
