Eternal Flame
Several Eyes

Brazilians SEVERAL EYES formed during 2014, from the remnants of various other defunct bands. Wasting no time whatsoever, the band got in the studio in the later part of 2014 to work on this release, the EP "Eternal Flame", with further plans already in place for two more EPs and a full length release during the course of 2015. They clearly aren't a band to rest on their laurels!
While the EP only consists of three tracks, it is the perfect length to give a clear picture of what SEVERAL EYES are all about. Kicking things off with the title track, their blend of Hard Rock and Metal is relatively simple yet definitely catchy, with a Power Metal sense of melody and hooks (although perhaps lacking some of the Power Metal sense of fun and energy). The vocals of Marcelo Almeida are precise and clear, and he does a great job of making the hook lines a lot more emotive than some might. It's unfortunate that, since the recording of "Eternal Flame", he seems to have parted ways with the band, but it will be interesting to see what someone new can bring to the table.
The Power Metal influence carries over into "Ghost Rider", with a prominent keyboard-based intro (all swelling organs and sweeping effects work) before a solid chugging Metal groove comes in. The final track "Spitting Fire" again shows the bands ability to craft a catchy melody, but on the whole, the EP suffers from the songs all being of a similar mid-tempo pace. Also, they are all rather lengthy numbers for the amount of energy and ideas they contain - the whole thing can feel a little plodding at times.
Overall, while "Eternal Flame" is a solid and well performed effort, the song writing and structuring could do with tightening up, and being injected with a bit more life and vigour. This would definitely be important considering that SEVERAL EYES are already planning a full length release! However, the potential is definitely there!
