What do you get when you hit the sweet spot between a horror movie and an artistic torture porn, well if you listen to the new record from SERVANTS OF THE MIST, you are sure to get that joy and feeling, if not the movie itself! Right from having an EP named as 'Gross Knowledge of Genital Mutilation', to the song lyrics and the music itself, everything here is what an extreme metal fan in you is craving for.
With a touch of blackened doom, these Floridian Metallers blast incomparably disturbing brutal Sludge Metal, like never heard before, and will leave you begging for more as there are just 4 deadly songs in here. Bringing their 2nd EP in 2 years with 'Gross Knowledge of Genital Mutilation', SERVANTS OF THE MIST look to take the Sludge and Doom scene by storm, and they almost succeed with this amazing record. Bringing in grotesque surgical lyrics, the music is equally haunting as found in the 11:58 min beast of a song in "Undeserving". The music takes you into a different dark work with haunting atmospheric guitar work. While the screaming and guttural vocals of Richard Smyth, Jr is unique and sometimes even hummable like in song like "Commit Suicide" and adds to the eerie feel of the music, the drums of RJ Howley, are slow and loud as you would expect with this type of music. Though keyboards are part of this band, I find it very hard to identify them, and they are as good as being absent! But it's the bass and the guitar work of these axe men that really elevate the album and take the music into a darker and doomier world. It's not very loud as you expect with a typical sludge record, but the production is so good that it gives the right balance to the volume of this album and gets the right mix to bring out the haunting effect the band is capable of.
Unlike many other records, there are no mediocre songs here, and every song adds to the beauty of what SERVANTS OF THE MIST bring to the table, even though the music is bound to be compared to some older bands of the genre. Clocking just around 25 min, this is a journey only for the brave and fans of extreme sludge and is sure to please the connoisseurs of aforementioned genres. I can't wait to listen to their next record, and hope it's a full length album!
