Septa - Destroyer album cover

SEPTA are a self-described alt-rock band from Ukraine, founded in 2006. Having released their critically acclaimed debut album "The Lover" in 2013 - "Destroyer" is their second album.Well, alt-rock might not be accurate, but it does serve as an umbrella term for many elements that the band takes under its wing such as Post-Hardcore, noise rock and trip hop. Destroyed is as twisted and mad as you might assume from combining all those elements into one album.

The way the album opens - in a creepy TODAY IS THE DAY-esque whispering that explodes into groovy post-hardcore. "Ruins on Ruins on Ruins" starts to make the pot boil - slowly fading from a stoner rock vibe to straight up Metalcore. I find the vocal flexibility of Eugene Tymchyk quite impressing and admirable - being able to bounce back and forth from screaming like a rabid dog to SYSTEM OF A DOWN-esque singing to even early CLUTCH-esque vocals. This album keeps attacking hard and harsh all the way through, Pulling and pulling you in and smashes you into a million pieces. Suddenly - like out of nowhere - "I, Havoc" will give you a calm serene electronica intermission from all the chaos. But bet that this is just a small break for a bigger storm to come. The carnage restarts with the track "Destroyer, Pts 3 & 4" that brings back the weird mix of metalcore and and old school hardcore Clutch sound that softens up mid song to a trip hop vibe that makes the instruments slowly fade back in - while keeping the vocals soft and atmospheric. The following track "Unmaker Omega" is a definite nod to NINE INCH NAILS, with its creepy industrial metal vibe. The album ends with the same vibe it had when it started - only this time the drummer is blast beating his high hat and the new presence of a chorus backing up the harmony. At once the band stops playing and lets the chorus finish the job.

This band has the balls to experiment with many different elements and concoct a strange, yet satisfying brew of it, not afraid to woo or scar the ears of the listeners. Thankfully the results are on their side - resulting in an oddball that definitely makes it's mark.
