The neighbors SELFTORTURE were kind enough to send us their latest full-length album Dead Center for a review. While you look at the back of the promo CD you can see the band wearing IMMOLATION, DYING FETUS and CANNIBAL CORPSE t-shirts. Because of this and because of - according to the publishing editor - the fact that I look a lot like one of the band's members, Dead Center ended up in my hands.
The Ankara based Metalcore band SELFTORTURE has already managed to release two more full-length albums, Mislead in 2002 and Person-A in 2004, both through Zoo Sound. The band decided to change label and release their third full-length effort through the Turkish Anger Epidemic Records. Let's see if these guys can proudly wear the shirts they wear.
I think that the DYING FETUS one is definitely justified by the band's music, since SELFTORTURE are playing a mix between brutal Hardcore and Death Metal. The music is mostly Grind with many Core elements that resemble to bands like DYING FETUS and MISERY INDEX, while the vocals are more on the Hardcore side and are mostly characterized by rawness and aggressiveness. The guitar work balances between Grind outbreaks and Hardcore mid tempo beatdown parts, and is helped by the rhythm section a lot in this quest. The sound is just good, but it could definitely be a lot better.
In my humble opinion, if SELFTORTURE had a more heavy and clear production, they would easily beat the living crap out of many shitty Metalcore bands out there. So, if you like brutal Hardcore or Grind in the way that the above mentioned bands taught to us, the Turkish metallers are definitely a good solution to your problem. Check them out!
