Self Disgrace - Fetus in Fetu album cover

On March 9, 2020, SELF DISGRACE released "Fetus in Fetu." SELF DISGRACE is a thrash metal band from Italy. After their formation in 2007, they released a demo titled "Rotten Revenge" in 2009. From 2010 to 2017, the band took a hiatus. Since 2017, the band has regrouped, gone through a few lineup changes, and released two full-length albums. "Fetus in Fetu" marks their third full-length album.

SELF DISGRACE is a thrash metal band with a lot to offer. In particular, the guitar stands out. Guitar solos are unique on each track and pretty kick-ass throughout. The guitar riffs are usually great as well. The growl from the bass rounds out the low-end of the album well. The drums sound awesome whether they're played at a frantic or slower pace. Dielle's vocals have a great snarling and menacing sound to them.

"Deliverance" begins with a good drum rhythm and riff but, unfortunately, has added opera singing and off-key chanting. The chanting and opera singing is eerie, but the effect is not polished due to the raw production. The second track "Never Born" starts off much better. The riff is gnarly and mean and the groove is headbang inducing. "The Mansion" and "In The Name Of Lies" are both energetic and classic thrash metal anthems.

The first few bars of "War" reminds me of the beginning beat of "Back in Black" by AC/DC. That's where the similarities end, but the resemblance to the AC/DC track made the instrumentals sound more upbeat than I would have expected from a track titled "War." In addition, the part where the vocals have a loudspeaker effect is quite cheesy and sounds like a pop music cliché. This ultimately robs the song of any power regardless of how meaningful the lyrics are.

After that track, the next two are a solid end to the album. "In Chains" is another good, classic thrash metal song. The guitar solo is a good showcase of Isa's shredding abilities. The closer "Cruel Tribulation" is my favorite off the album. The drumming and riffs of the intro are catchy, and the bluesy guitar riff is great.

Overall, I recommend this band for serious fans of thrash metal. The band has talent with their instruments, but the songs need polishing. I appreciate their efforts to incorporate interesting elements into their songs, and if they push a bit further, they may produce great music in the future.
