Seer - Vol. 1 album cover

Before listening to SEER's "Vol 1", I was wondering who was kidding me here. 2 songs are obviously not an album it's not even a conventional EP being that short. Then I let the music start, and after exactly 20 seconds I stopped it and came back to it after a while. The singer's vocal were so outstanding I had to take a moment to recruit before giving those two songs a proper listen.

SEER defines themselves as Heavy Metal though they are much closer to the Progressive Metal, and they come from Vancouver. They have been working for about 7 month now (since Nov. '14) and they are influenced by... well... nature, I guess. That is pretty much all we can tell about them, and I think listening to them is enough to understand everything else. What is it they are doing? I have no idea, but they do it well. Still, I have only those two songs to refer to.

Given my dislike for Extreme Metal vocals, of course I was upset when the clear deep vocals moved aside to make room for the aggressive grunting, but I do have to say, the combination between the two make something special and extremely weird. I loved it. The guitars were a bit loud when trying to listen to the entire piece together, that might have hurt the vocals a little. Everything else was exactly right, the drums for example backed up the piece but also stood up for themselves.

The many elements of those two songs make up a tune that has almost everything for everyone. It has clean, deep, beautiful vocals side to side with angry grunts. The guitars are loud and heavily riffed, yet in some spots they are smooth and high. The lyrics are both holistic and heartwarming, and in the same time harsh, diabolical and meaningful. With all those twists, and good ones at that, you can expect nothing but greatness of those guys.
