Departing Ways
Seeking Siren
A metalcore band from North Carolina(USA) in the making by two musicians; vocalist JOSEPH IZAYEA, of bands such as FROM UNDER CONCRETE, SOUR TIMES, CITY OF HOMES comes together with guitarist/recording engineer KEVIN WILSON of bands like FEAR THE UNITED and VANISHER. These two had been in talks before about collaborating before so at last they formed their band SEEKING SIRENS a they became a five member band with three more members including; vocalist/guitarist CHRIS KILCUP, bassist DAVE SUSTAIN and drummer MATT LAVOCADO. They released two singles in 2021 SURFACE and SPLINTER which both gave their target audience of listeners a taste of what this collaboration between JOSEPH and KEVIN could produce for fans of metalcore.
Now in the midst of 2022, the quintet are finally here with a stunning EP titled DEPARTING WAYS which features five tracks with belting vocals, mind blowing drum parts and ecstatic guitar and deadly bass tones. The EP starts the ball rolling with "Departing Ways" as a soundscape crescendo is lurking in the background rising with drum patterns. Guitar and bass join in too with minimal guitar tuning then it seeps through as vocals conceive a headbanging intro. There is essences of piano as well as vocals dig deep in tone and mimic the higher notes of piano but completely transform to cunning vocals fat in tone and in depth for range. At times as well we can hear backing vocals come in for certain phases mostly in the chorus.
This is a great start to the EP as we head into the next track "Surface" as gentle piano introduces this next track. Drums slowly emerge as vocals also walk steadily before drums kick in for heavy patterns but still approaching with caution. This second track isn't as heavy as vocals are concerned but other instruments do play the melodic and grinding tones. We also hear keyboard sound effects at one point as we go into the third track which is "Splinter". Guitar has that melodic, pingy tone to introduce this track as vocals revert back to metalcore mode, screeching. The guitar we heard at the start repeats in the background then bows out briefly so vocals and drums combine for a battle-hardened partnership. Vocals remain strong as we head into the fourth track.
"Grip" opens with high end, pitched guitar in a tremolo effect as piano follows suit too before vocals intervene. The contrast of the two vocal lines, one heavy and the other more cleaner or melodic which is such a strong point of this bands style or approach. Drums enter a breakdown vocals to turn evil and savage, begging for mercy in violent outbursts. As we now enter the fifth and grand finale of this EP we steer towards the end. "Living Truth" with a heavy progressive guitar and clarity of drums as vocals act as a guide for other elements to flow intertwining with each other more. Vocals also show its contrast between clean and screamer vocal lines as they are a force of nature. This last track certainly proves a lot and shows what this band can do if they were to release more music, as their sound is spectacular to listen to. A collaboration that has definitely worked and paid off too as I hugely enjoyed listening to a brand new metalcore band which I am sure will go very far indeed.
