Sea in the Sky - Fall in Place album cover

From Bandcamp, "SEA IN THE SKY was founded in July 2012. They have created a unique, fresh sound that has caught the attention of the San Francisco bay area music scene. These four up and coming musicians provide you heavy, groovy and catchy instrumental music that is similar to PERIPHERY, ANIMALS AS LEADERS, SCALE THE SUMMIT, CHON, and INTERVALS." The new album is called "Fall in Place," and it has six songs.

"Tabula Rasa" is first. It's a short song with heavy rhythm guitar accents and melodic leads. Listen to those runs...they obviously come from the hands of a skilled musician. "Wait, Patiently" is an exercise of doubt, and this line might be the most poignant of all: "But we know better than to go and lose our hearts and heads, pretending to know which path is laid out for better men." The music is warm and gentle at first, and grows heavier and more ardent as it continues, and those sexy saxophone notes towards the end give way to another very dexterous lead guitar line.

"Fall in Place" has a delicate balance between sweet, harmonized vocals and a somewhat aggressive rhythm section. I love that you can hear the bass notes as well....they are meaty and carry some of the melody. "Please Hold" is an instrumental with a lively groove. The simple melody line is one that just sticks in your head and takes root. "Indebtor" seems to be about just being yourself, and not being concerned with any genetic factors that might shape who you are. The music is balmy and it becomes more lively and weighted as it moves.

"The Next Time Around" closes the album. The lyric that hits me most is: "Well, I've got friends much deader than I, but they are much better off than I am." Is this because he feels, and there are a variety of feelings that can be good or bad? The music is very sweet, and it begins a steady build around the half-way mark, and the heavy electronic towards the end is a vibrant change. Overall, this was a lovely album that had lyrics that make the listener think, and music that is both inviting and also has a fierce bite to it as well. The band is a bit of an enigma to me, but no one can deny their talent for writing and performing catchy music.
