SCYLLA's structure of "Nascency" is that of Thrash. The funny thing is they play Black Metal but in a class of its own. It's not anything at all like a Black / Thrash band either. The songs' structure is akin to straightforward Thrash with little to no divergence. In case you are confused, they're simply a Black Metal band, an unconventional one at that. Due to being a bit different from the occasional Black Metal I thought I'd give these guys a shot. Hmm, at first they were quite interesting but as I listened to more and more, I felt myself become gloomy. Gloomy because there was no atmosphere to feed off from. It's the same feeling I get when I randomly find a Thrash Metal band on YouTube and click away because it was generic. It's a simple record and doesn't entice my imagination.
It felt like a joke to me, more so when I heard the vocalist. Contrary to what I said about imagination, it did entice mine on a more superficial level. The vocalist, I chuckled a little inside when I came up with a description of what he sounded like. It's like he had a little bit of beer at the back of his throat but had not swallowed it yet. It felt like this whole album was recorded that way and I could also hear the subtle "ahh" sound someone makes when they're satisfied with their beverage. The vocals weren't awful they were just different I should say.
What were difficult to endure were the guitarists. It was simple, simple rather than simple, genius or simple, atmospheric if you catch my drift. I could tell they were trying to make their songs lively or catchy by harmonizing melodies. But that's what made them sink. They depended on one rhythm to make some of their songs sound successful. It failed miserably. Their styles contradicted a bit in my opinion. They were what I'd like to call a mixture of Black Metal and Melodic Death Metal (MDM). But like water and oil, even though they were in the same area, they ultimately never mix. Due to my inexperience and ignorance in guitars I cannot really name the technical terms to the techniques they were using. But in genre terms, it was essentially decent Black Metal and generic MDM. Don't quote me on that either, the melodies is what gave the impression of MDM.
As you can probably see there are various amount of styles incorporated into this. Ultimately though, it just doesn't come out right. I really cannot recommend this but if you love Thrash and dislike Black Metal then I guess this can be alright for those folks. Maybe also for those whose favorite genre is Melodic Death Metal but I wouldn't count on it.
