Triangle
Schammasch
Since the coming of CELTIC FROST and CORONER in the 80s, to break limits and expand frontiers became a tradition in the Swiss Metal scene. Then, to hear a band as SCHAMMASCH is an excellent experience, especially when we are dealing with "Triangle," their third album. They play a form of Avant-garde Black Metal that is filthy and nasty, but with a very good and different insight, using somber melodies here and there. It's not something easy to understand and assimilate, but it's excellent, and the more you get used to their musical work, the more you like it. The album has three CDs, so you'll have to deal with three aspects of their musical identity: on CD one that is harsh and raw (but with a very good musical aesthetics); on the second one, with a melodic and more introspective insight; and on the third CD, a more atmospheric aspect, with an almost instrumental and somber focus (only one song has some narrative voices). So get prepared for a long journey into their musical world.
The sound quality is raw, maybe a bit more than necessary. But it not only fits on their musical work, but gives that dusty and morbid feeling that we already know from bands of the SWOBM. It will not require of you do too much effort to understand what the band's standing for. If we can see the separate parts of "Triangle" as a unit, we can point to the following songs as their best moments: The somber and dusty feeling that fills "Crepusculum" and "Father's Breath" (the first is a funereal instrumental song, and the second is a nasty and raw piece of music, both done with very good climatic riffs), the atmospheric nasty feeling that is presented on the aggressive "In Dialogue with Death" (very good vocals, and great bass guitar and drums works), the depressive and melancholic created by the riffs on the abrasive instrumental parts of "Consensus", the nasty melodies that we can hear on "Satori" (this one with focus on the aggressive voices) and "Metanoia" (this one presenting very good instrumental experiments, some clean and other agonizing voices, and very good guitar solo), the introspective "Above the Stars of God" (with very good clean moments, and on dirty ones, that depressive melancholic aura created by guitars), and the atmospheric ones "Maelstrom" and "The Emperyan" (both created with very good keyboards effects).
So, as my final words on this review, I truly recommend you to give "Triangle" a chance, because I believe that SCHAMMASCH is holding the key for new musical possibilities.
