Scarecell - New Horizons album cover

This is the first EP by with 5 man band from Helsinki, Finland. They have been honing their craft for a few years and finally released this EP at the end of last year. I took my time listening to this EP because it's not very long and I had problems with my first listening session. I felt I was not paying enough attention to what I was listening to. To be honest, I felt this album really fell flat.
I felt it was pretty inconsistent unfortunately. They try so many different styles in the span of 4 songs. They go from the Gothenburg Sound at the beginning of the first song to some Nu Metal rehash from the early 2000s. It's like they didn't know exactly where they were going so they tried different things on all of the songs. It seems that they can't find their own identity at all. I loved the first part of the first song, it sounded like some IN FLAMES or DARK TRANQUILLITY from the back in the day but then it took a pretty deep plunge.
On ''Lay Down Forever'',  they try a commercial sound, something that could be on radio. It sounded like the heaviness of TIMES OF GRACE but with the repetitive drive and beat from bands like POP EVIL or THREE DAYS GRACE. It has breakdowns and the singer kinda moans! He seems to be going through the motions and it's a pretty big step back from the Death Metal stylings of the opening song.
On ''The Fire (We Start)'', they try to dive head first in the Nu-Metal genre. Look I am the first to say I really enjoyed the genre back in the day, bands like GODSMACK, KORN and a bit of DISTURBED. But low and behold, its been a pretty damn while I haven't like or listened to that type of music anymore. This song actually sounds a bit like KORN and well. The year 2000 called, they want their music back....
Overall the production quality is pretty good and the guys have alot of promise. They just need to stick to their guns and to one sub-genre to be a complete band.
