Dimensions
Saturnian
Within every human being there lays a soul, however hidden deep within this mesmerizing essence there is a secreted inner power that only a few chosen individuals can unleash when the clock strikes twelve. That power might transfer the internal entity into a different universe, perhaps a dimension or even into the far reaches of a new state of consciousness. Honestly this is a hell of theme for an album and what better than from a Symphonic Black Metal band to carry out the proceedings of this high up in the sky epos. Though this UK band's debut album "Dimensions", released via Indie Recordings, isn't an actual concept, it has its way to connect the dots through the changed worlds it looms above. SATURNIAN, may have been breathing for less than a year, but their material, which is largely in the vein of the DIMMU BORGIR horror show, CRADLE OF FILTH and with the slight methodological prowess of OBSCURA, felt as if they were veterans making their comeback after years without a word. On the other hand, "Dimensions", though presents a wall of sound that is almost of no other when it comes to the sharper edges of Black Metal (produced by the amazing DIMMU BORGIR producer Russ Russell), wasn't able to penetrate my heart as I so wanted it to.
The whole album, probably due to the production, textured as bombastic with a few additional instruments such as the Synth in order to create an Astral like feel, even an obscure space and time theme I might add while haloing the entire scene with a sort of a spiritual bottomless hollow that is just there and strikes at will. Musically, the SATURNIAN musicians are nothing else but profound. In order to create this type of music everything has to tick and tight as hell. In that department I have no complaints; this is more than just a capable crew of individuals. I mostly enjoyed the vocals of Wilson that very much resembled Shagrath of DIMMU BORGIR, but also displayed here and there a raspy / clean vocal line that was equally a blessing. Along with the main vocal line, there is that enchanting Gregorian choir that provided another transparent covering to the Synth. Second I couldn't help myself for not be amazed by the guitars of Myk &Martin and the hellish drumming machine of Sam. Though both lines were also highly similar to DIMMU BORGIR, especially when it comes to the same kind of pattern whether is the constant pace transformations and highly melodic sense towards harmonies and incredible soloing I could sense the energies devoted for their free rein throughout the album.
Along with these marvelous abilities, SATURNIAN manifested a few chapters that should be carved upon their history like "Shadow of Prophecy", "Into Etherea"and "The Immaculate Deception". This special kind of material is a mind challenger but also a sort of theoretical spectacle for one to imagine. The music is more or less flowing to a singular direction. On the other hand, the certain flow was the major reason why after a few listens it was hard for me to fully connect to the work done on this release. All in all there are terrific moments where my imagination worked over time in order to comprehend the conceptual memorandum of each track. These moments also harbor the swarming musical content that this band has to offer, from extreme melodies and heavy rhythms through tainted vocals to blasphemous drumming. Yet, there were times that sections, verses and passages didn't add up and I felt disconnected within several of the songs around here as SATURNIAN were trying to tie up additional sections to a song without going over it again. Nevertheless, "Dimensions"can be reckoned as a great work of Symphonic extreme Metal. Is it well produced and can be a gem to DIMMU BORGIR fans. However, I wonder if SATURNIAN will try to head on their own road after this one due to the strong correspondence to the Norwegian giants.
