It's becoming more and more common among new underground bands to put out 2 song EPs, which makes sense for both economic reasons and musical, where the band test itself to impress the listeners in a short span, before spending more on the full length. Austrian doomers SATIVA ROOT released their 2nd EP "Dark Days" this March 13 with just 2 songs and the band seems to have cleared the test!
The 1st song being the title track "Dark Days" starts with a girls voice in the background struggling to find water, as the music chugs along melodically with some slow bass work before transforming into a groovy sludgy bass sound, enough to make your head bang slow along to the riffs. The guitar solos pup itself out occasionally in the middle even as the bass still remains the crux of the band's sound. It's just pure old school Doom stuff for the connoisseurs, minus the vocals giving more room for the boys to express themselves with their instruments. The song is structured very technically helping the listeners to envisage and imagine the band live as well due to the excellent production given to the sound.
Interestingly both the songs here are just over 5 min, unlike more than 7 min tracks that one might be expecting in these kind of bands. In any case, the next song "La Bestia" is slightly faster in its approach as the drums and the guitar work try to bring nostalgia of BLACK SABBATH back, keeping the originality all throughout the song. The song almost turns into a Traditional Heavy Metal in the later part of the song, and still manage to keep the Doom Metal characteristics intact. The boys show high musicianship in their only 2nd EP.
Clocking just 10:40 min, "Dark Days" gets all my votes, as there are no hiccups in the only 2 songs available, which to be frank is kind of real disappointment considering how good the music turned out to be. I just hope the band brings out full length as fast as they brought their 2nd EP.
