Those of you NWOBHM nuts out there like myself, will need absolutely no introduction to the mighty SATAN, one of the best but sadly one of the most overlooked and obscure of the NWOBHM movement in the late 70's/early 80's. Founded in 1979; SATAN have had a complicated and interesting history consisting of numerous line-up changes, a few inactive years and even changes to the band name itself. After their first album "Court in the Act" released in 1983 (one of my all-time favourite NWOBHM albums), the band then released 1 album as BLIND FURY, then changed their name back and released "Suspended Sentence", then released 3 studio albums over the course of a decade as PARIAH. Re-united again in 2011 as SATAN they released "Life Sentence" in 2013 and now here in 2015, we have a new SATAN album to feast our ears on!
"Atom by Atom" opens up straight in your face and powerful with a raw power metal scream and in-your-face riff. "Farewell Evolution" is the perfect song to open up the album, it's fast, furious and frantic and had my spirits high within the first 2 minutes and I never lost that vibe once whilst listening to the album. The guitar work on this album is not to be overlooked here either, SATAN have always been known for playing a more technically advanced style of NWOBHM as opposed to most other bands of their style and this new album is no exception; I found myself intrigued and kept on my toes during most of the songs in terms of following the structural and musical technicality of the songs which I really enjoyed because one thing I would say about some NWOBHM is that It can be quite predictable in terms of structure and whatnot, but SATAN manage to avoid that easy trap and keep their ideas fresh and exciting. "The Devil's Infantry" was the first glimpse of the album for the public when it was released as a single a couple of months ago and is more of a Thrash Metal song rather than NWOBHM but it is possible one of the strongest songs on the album, with interesting structural ideas and unforgettable, amazing guitar work once again, not to mention the changes of rhythm within the song.
"Atom By Atom" is an album perfect for all fans of 80's metal and is a testament to the bands long career and I think will go down as one of the bands most important album, I urge you to check this one out, aswell as the bands albums in the 80's aswell if you are knew to these guys... SATAN do not disappoint.
