Visions Of Pain

Another case of a great Glam metal band who showed up in the dying days of the Glam Metal 80's scene golden years. They quickly rose only to fade away after a short while. The all story started in November of 1989 with the formation of SANDRA DEE. The name originated after a MOTLEY CRUE song "Come On And Dance". Soon after playing shows around Illinois, they began receiving their reputation at clubs and opened for the biggest names such including BANG TANGO, SHOTGUN MESSIAH and FIREHOUSE.
The gigs started to roll on and the band decided to relocate their place to LA where the whole scene was rushing in order to try their luck over there. But after moving out their dream didn't fit to what they expected as they fought hard to secure their name among other Glam Metal bands. Their goal was something hard and almost impossible while their diehard fans were back in their local home town Illinois.
Their album "Visions Of Pain" presents a darker side, somewhat rough and dirty, of Glam Metal in the vein of NO RESPECT, PYN SIREN and SKID ROW mixed with the Sleaze Glam of bands such as MOTLEY CRUE and VAIN. No doubt, these guys knew what they were doing and had lots of attitude in their songs, providing powerful guitar riffs and big hooks. Take a listen to their song "Inside Yourself" which demonstrated guitar riffs made like thunder with high note hoarse and rough vocals. The song seemed to developed all the time. It started with bombing drums that progressed into a LYNCH MOB style with a Sebastian Bach type of vocalist singing. There were also some crazy guitar solos during the song which gave it additional volume. The self-titled track "Visions Of Pain" is darker, and has some ALICE IN CHAINS motives that turned it in the end into a sort of Thrash Metalpart. It is rather a very emotional track with a lot of soreness in the singing and screaming.
"Cold" went along with a variety of sleazy Glam type of vocals. It is a little bit different from the musical concept of the album. Songs such as "Nothing" made this album to what it is. A strong Hard Rock without compromises, straight to the face, strong guitar riffs with the tough vocals. "Going Down", "Pretty Child" & "Take You Higher" that start like a part from a southern Spaghetti movie are also great tracks here while showing a great dynamic in the vocals bearing strong choruses, alongside the Hard Rock mixed with Heavy Metal. The songs are very good but it could have been helpful if they could polish it more so that it won't sound like another version of SKID ROW.
The production is awful. The guitars are not bright enough so one would hear exactly their story. The drums were very blank and frosty. I could give this album much more because I am a big fan of that style but it's too bad to release something with such a bad production. I really recommend on this SANDRA DEE album, you should check it out and although the circumstance you will find what could have been a Hard Rock gold.
