Mors Salis: Opus I

SALTAS is a duo from Sweden. Described as death/doom metal, but I would say they lean more towards atmospheric black metal. Originally formed in 2017, the duo would go on to release two successful demos, "Currents" and "Parasites". They return with their debut full-length album, "Mors Salis: Opus I".
The album is indeed what the band themselves describe their sound as, "filthy underground noise in dark dimensions, misery and death....". This album has that in spades. There is a ton of odd atmospheric noise being thrown together in the entirety of the sound. There are semblances of a melody, but not a whole lot to decipher. The opening track, "Metaspiritual Redisintergration", seems to just be a creepy track of groans and drums. It takes until the second track, "Tremors", to bring in the first actual melodious sounding song.
More groans are heard as close to being vocals as possible, but there is what makes to be a sort of creepy doom metal type sound emanating throughout the track. "Dimensional Seismic Waves" comes in with a surf-like metal sound, which I like, then returns to the eerie typical sound of the album. This is the first time in all the album where you get to hear some sort of actual put together melodies. The normal drum cadence returns with the dissonance of eerie vocals heard in the background. I was hoping to hear some sort of full song come from the band, but that time never came. There are hints of melodies, but nothing that I could consider concrete. "...The Liberation" has a small amount of melody to it, but overall is the same creepy dissonant sounds heard throughout the album.
Again, with most odd atmospheric metal, there isn't a whole lot I like about this album. It hits on every facet when it comes to the deep, dark, and creepy sounds that they are seemingly going for, but it holds little to no value for me. Unless of course I was searching for a creepy soundtrack to a deeply disturbed horror film.
