Sagorah - I album cover

It is no secret that Metal is now a worldwide affair. With the advent of the internet, bands from hidden corners of the world now have a platform upon which to showcase themselves. Whilst this is of course great for any listener, it does tend to lead to oversaturation. For every original and defining band, there are ten bands playing rehashed 80s riffs. Especially in the chaotic and relentless world of Death Metal, it is difficult to find something different, something with a little flair.

Hailing from a small village in northern Italy, SAGORAH are a little more than a run of the mill Death Metal band and "I" is their first full length release. Without the muddy production that plagues other bands, there is real clarity in the instrumentation. Allowing for the second track "And We Cry" to be purpose built as a monolithic 4 minute workout. Neck-snapping speed and an overall feel that makes you want to spin kick the nearest civilian, it is gloriously heavy.

Follow-up "Meat Time" is a more traditional offering, the typical double bass drum work laced with throaty vocals, it builds to a purely filthy crescendo before escaping into pure insanity. With developing dynamics on the vocals, this track stands out as the most accessible without compromising on the sheer venomocity of the music.

Whilst the into to "Endless Pain" would sound more at home on a contemporary Metalcore release, it showcases some erratic almost claustrophobic lead guitar work. The ensuring atmospheric sounding verse is most definitely a curveball, a moment of space in the music in between its apocalyptic surroundings.   The most out of place track on the album, it serves more as a taster before the NWOAHM flavoured "Cocaine Cowboy" two-steps it way into your face. A track that has a groove that stands head and shoulders above all others, the potent mix of pedal tones and off-beat snares is used to full effect.

Clocking in at just below 30 minutes, "I" is a prime example of why it is often quality over quantity when it comes to modern Death Metal releases.
