SACROCURSE is a black / death metal based out of Mexico and Turkey and who have been around since 2012. This is their latest EP entitled "Supreme Terror" which was released through Shadow Records on January 20th, 2021.

Some war effects start us off in the opening segment of "Herethical Catharsis" where it sounds like we are in the middle of a 1950s war flick. The transition into heavy bass and blazing blast beats is immediate. The vocals are incredibly guttural and really have an old school side to them (think the very early days of 1990s Swedish death metal). The guitars have a bit more a black metal edge to them, except when you have the low-tone riffs that are reminiscent of MORBID ANGEL. Thankfully, the song is not one-dimensional, as it does have some slower passages with some pounding grooves. Not the most audible guitar solo in this number, but there is a huge Jeff Hanneman influence in its delivery.

"Man Became Cursed" is even more predominantly violent in its structure and approach. There are some echo effects in the vocals to add a bit more depth. The rhythm guitars however do not simply repeat the pattern over and over, as they change a bit during the song, even though the main purpose is for the guitars to follow the intensity of the drums. As the previous track, I enjoyed the slower and sludgier parts that reminded of the old days of MORGOTH.

To be fair, "Temple Is Open" relies on the same aspects as the other tracks with the low tones in the guitars, the lightning-fast drums but it has a bit more a thrash metal side to it and even some portions that are a flashback to bridges and choruses of KREATOR, especially when they rely on the darker side of their music. As with the other 2 songs, the solo is not incredibly audible, but it goes into overdrive on more than 1 occasion.

Finally, we have "From Genesis to Revelations", a number that sounds like a mix of BENEDICTION, CANNIBAL CORPSE and BAPHOMET. This is about as close as a song can get to be covered in filth and sound like the band recorded this in some abandoned cavern. There is a claustrophobic to this one and the same retro-style death metal that has been so popular over the last 5 years. The closer is not overly different from the others, but what it shares by far is its relentless drums and sheer aggression.

Overall, this EP does not dwell on the atmospheric side of death metal, in fact its quite the opposite; it pulls no punches and quickly becomes a wall of sound. If you are nostalgic and wish to listen to a few death metal songs that are a pure throwback to the 1990s, this would be a good start.
