You know you're in for a death metal treat just reading the song titles on RUTTENSKALLE's latest release "Skin 'Em Alive," the solo project of Paulo Soares.

There's no holding back from absolute brutality (both musically and lyrically) with the first song "Feast of the Dying Sluts." I really love the guitar riffs in this one. But if I had to pick a favorite song on the album I would say "Carnage" is the best. I like the energy it has and the overall composition.

I know you didn't think you needed another pummeling so soon, but "Rotten God" says differently when the drums come in fast and deadly. While it is an awesome feat for one person to produce an entire album themselves, the main issue I have with this album is how fake the drums sound - they're very clearly programmed, which isn't an unusual practice, however, I feel better mixing could have taken place to make them more realistic.

Truth be told, I'm also not a huge fan of the main vocal technique/sound used throughout the album. It's very deep and forced, almost like he's struggling. It reminds me a lot of the bad voice impressions people do of Arnold Schwarzenegger. I definitely prefer Soares' high screams that are interspersed throughout.

Judging by the song titles one already knows the lyrical content is going to be crude and shocking, definitely not for the faint of heart. I personally am not a fan of this type of writing or content as far as music is concerned. I'm a huge horror fan and have always loved gore, but something about entire albums consisting of brutal, gruesome lyrical content doesn't do it for me.

Another thing I heard that seemed to bother me was the dive bomb guitar technique Soares uses in multiple songs. It just doesn't seem to fit with the rest of the music and he does it enough times that it feels noticeably out of place. I think Soares does some really interesting and fun things with his guitar work, but that technique is not one of them. I do really love the riff he uses in the beginning of the last song "Brainless Whore."

I really enjoy the opening guitars on the fifth song "Buried." It makes me think of the music at the end of a horror film in the part where the final person standing is getting ready to face off against the killer/monster one last time. A lot of the album has that foreboding, eerie tone. In fact the song "Anal Ride" begins with the sounds of a chainsaw and a woman screaming. The end of "Brainless Whore"" includes a recording of someone describing a murder. No doubt Soares wanted to express tones of doom and death.
