Roadwolf - Midnight Lightning album cover

From their record label's webpage, "Brace yourself for an ear-shattering, face-melting experience as Austrian heavy metal sensations ROADWOLF unleash their highly-anticipated sophomore album, "Midnight Lightning." With their debut album, Unchain the Wolf (2020), the band firmly established themselves as purveyors of classic heavy metal." The album has ten songs, and "On the Run" is the first. The riff has a lot of energy to it, and there is plenty of harmony. I usually don't care for these throwback albums but this one has a strong backbone so far.

"Midnight Lightning" is a mid-tempo number with a sexy swing to it, and lots of melody. Franz's vocals are also strong, and the harmonies in the chorus are on point. "Mark of the Devil" has a bite of might and power in the main riff. I get a distinct MOTORHEAD feeling at times, as well as some SAXON thrown in every now and again. "High Under Pressure" is a raucous party in the back yard complete with sunny weather, a pool, plenty of beer, and this song cranking in the background until dawn. "Sons of the Golden Horde" is an anthem for what the band is all about. It has a steady mid-tempo pace and much of the focus is on the vocals and the riff. "Don't Deliver Us from Evil" s a statement on the band's purpose. Like many subjects in the NWOBHM, it's more like a big "fuck you" to everyone.

"Savage Child" has a good deal of energy and a bit foot kicking your ass. I love the bass work here as well...there are elements of Steve Harris rumbling in his string thwacks, and it sounds like something that could be on the "Killers" album. "Isolated Hearts" closes the album, and it's a tender closer with piano. Overall, this was an old school ode to the giants of the genre back in the day. It was honest, raucous, full of energy, and the band plays with a confidence that you don't hear a lot of these days.
