Reckless Love

I am not the kind of person who will be attracted to cheesy, sleazy Glam Metal, and I must say that I have never been that a bigger fan of RECKLESS LOVE, only a few tracks of theirs really moved me. I got clear a stance when it comes to bands who are trying to restore the golden years of Glam Metal and while doing so are making some Pop Metal that is not included in my lexicon. I asked for the new album by RECKLESS LOVE because I was very curious about hearing what is new about them and if there is a change in their direction.
As I pushed play, the first track "Night On Fire" reminded me what I was talking about - it sounded more like a poppy happier version of 80s Metal and fit to the Eurovision contest, but I don't know why, suddenly I realized that the more I hate it, the more I am listening to it over and over again as the chorus glued itself to my senses. No much of a hate, isn't it? "Bad Lovin" straits like a stolen track of BON JOVI dated back to 1988. A main heavy guitar riff from the start to end and a killer solo, the song banged my head back and forth. I didn't understand the cheesy lyrical rambling in the chorus, but it can work pretty well as a sing along. "I Love Heavy Metal", a great name for an anthem, I could hear clearly distinguish Olli Herman's influences, Joe Elliot is definitely the main one along with David Lee Roth. A great song which includes all the legends that I grew up on, the guitar riff is in the same vein of "Cherry Pie" by WARRANT. RECKLESS LOVE took me back to 1990, thus recreating the old feel successfully. "Favorite Flavor", has some poppy atmosphere, not my kind of taste as my Glam or Hard N' Heavy is when a band puts up some Heavy Metal riffs to the mix.
"Edge Of Our Dreams" is 10/10 song, a great masterpiece, right from the get go until the living end. The chorus is brilliant, like an old hymn. I am sure that it is going to squander my every being for some time. "Sex, Drugs & Reckless Love", at first I thought that it's "You've Got Another Thing Coming" with the opening riff. It's not the best song, not something that blew me away, it felt as if I heard it countless of times, forget about a renewal. The roughness is missing, but I receive it on "Metal Ass", not a typical song for this band, it expresses heaviness and very fast playing with Herman some fairly high notes. Good to know that RECKLESS LOVE has other things to offer other than being cheesy. "Runaway Love" reminded me little bit ROXETTE, the chorus being catchy and there are several nice licks as well, yet it didn't show any signs of utter greatness. "So Happy I Could Die" is another masterpiece, a heart stopper, once again RECKLESS LOVE prepared the Heavy Metal elixir and just wish all their songs would be like this one. This track is the best on the album; it shows the proficiency of Pepe's skills, the tightness of Jalle Verne and Hessu Maxx's rhythm section, and the probability that you won't stop banging your head. You will realize that you will not have enough from the chorus and continue to sing it after the song is over. "Hot Rain" is the closing track of the album, a nice ballad, but something is missing on the song's production, it felt a bit empty while the song itself lacked enough melodies or backing vocals on the chorus, the guitar solo made it come alive for a while. It could have been the second "Love Bites" by DEF LEPPARD, a shame that it wasn't in the same level.
Usually after one listen I know what my opinion on an album is but here it was difficult because this is my favorite genre and RECKLESS LOVE's crew are great musicians, with the knowledge of writing quality songs. However, and they know how to write a good song but only a few caught my ear, I don't know if it's because there wasn't anything to renew or because the band's cheesy direction of Glam. I will be glad to see if they will continue by going through songs like "Metal Ass" and "So Happy I could Die" along with "Edge of Our Dreams" instead of poppy and happy mischiefs. Still contemplating with myself if I like it or not. Glam might be commercial, but I expect true ruddiness alongside heaviness. Maybe next time around.
