Consuming Aberration

When you come from a country that was colonized in the past, it's extremely hard to detach all of the colonial aspects and traits that live inside the deeper parts of minds. This idea, inherited of the Social Sciences, can explain why many countries present certain Metal models as patterns. One example: a massive number of acts of Chile (not all of them) have an Old School Metal format, and it seems that the musicians can't understand that no one must sound like anyone else. But some surprises appear from time to time, as PUTRID YELL with "Consuming Aberration", their first full-length. The band works on a form of Old School Death Metal that was used by acts as ENTOMBED, DISMEMBER (especially due the jigsaw guitar sound), MORGOTH, ASPHYX and others of the Second Wave of the genre (those that appeared between 1989 and 1992), when Hardcore hooks where clear on the genre.
The band's music is caustic, primitive and they don't seem to need to create something different of what already exists. But even with all these clichés, there's something personal pulsing under all these heavy influences, traces of a personality that must be fed to grow. So it's not a waste of time to hear and enjoying this release. Recorded and mixed by the hands of Cristian Leon and mastered by Damien Herring, it's obvious that the choice was for s sonority that is crude and rough, as it's usual for Old School Death Metal acts. But there's a difference: it's not as putrid as one can think, because the band can be clearly understood. It's a very good result, although there were many other different ways to doing it in a better form. And the artwork of Putrid Matt for the cover is sickening and disturbing, as a Death Metal album must be.
The quintet's efforts are in a good level, as shown on songs as "The Search" (a fast song with very good catchy guitar riffs), "Consuming Aberration" (a strong and simple piledriving work of bass guitar and drums can be heard, sustaining the weight), "Desire of Death" (a putrid and hardorized song with many hooks and good grunts), "Charred Corpses" (another moment with Hardcore inherited hooks, and some Grindcore elements), and "Wrenching Putrid Yell", where one can check as they're a promising name. It's just a matter of shaping their efforts, because the way they create songs isn't bad at all. Maybe they can look for some advisement of experienced guys into such genre as Dan Swanö could be a helping hand.
As final words: PUTRID YELL has much to offer, it's just a matter of evolving and adjusting their efforts to something more personal. But no one said that "Consuming Aberration" isn't a good release after all.
