After a few EPs, POSSESSION has stepped up to present their debut full-length album, in a bid to show their prowess in the blackened death metal subgenre. The band has also had a change to the lineup, with V. Viriakh becoming the new frontman, and S. Iblis coming on board as bassist. Wild, relentless passages are tempered with mid-tempo and Doom Metal interludes. But don't be fooled into thinking that the Doom Metal passages are for calm before the next onslaught - instead such passages are more like quicksand, slowly dragging you to your death. Overall, I thought that this album is a dark brew with the Black Metal and Death Metal elements mixed in just the right quantities.
"Sacerdotium" is one of the strongest tracks, and the drumbeats carried over from "Intro" build anticipation. The cold riffs hint at sinister happenings to come. "Take the Oath" is an old-school-style headbanger, and Viriakh's vocals have a persuasive tone to them. I. Dveikus comes out with a smoldering solo. There's plenty to enjoy on this album, but unfortunately, I think that the keyboards on "In Vain" sound a little bit out of place. They reminded me of 80s-style Gothic Rock, which is by no means an inferior source of inspiration. The track is a good one overall, with some majorly heavy doom riffs near the beginning. A spooky choir chants, then comes a catchy fast section.
The album ends with another strong number, "Preacher's Death": the doomy riffs create a feeling of inevitability; this feeling is emphasized by the growled "ashes to ashes" line. Pz. Kpfw's drums in the faster section create a picture of time passing all to quickly to the moment of death. I thought that this track displayed his best performance on the album. POSSESSION give off the impression that they've settled well into their sound; there's a sureness to their performance throughout the album. "Exorkizein" is a portent of more good things to come from the band.
