PLAGUEWIELDER issue their third release of 2019 following the two singles: "Where Did You Sleep Last Night", which is the cover of the traditional American folk song that we have heard bands such as NIRVANA cover and "Suffering from Self Inflicted Wounds", both being on this EP also, "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" reverted to "In The Pines" which it is also known as. This EP may allow the band to stretch out their talents before producing another full-length album in future, which would be number 3, behind Succumb to the Ash and Surrender to the Void which were released in 2015 and 2018 respectively.
"Coffin Filled with Dust" starts with the tempo and beat creating a decent melody. Vocals are not quite in speed, but the band soon come into balance and the composure takes the song well. The Black Metal vibes are easy to hear. The difference with this album and many others like it, is that you can hear and appreciate all aspects. The instrumentalists are clearly heard and melodies are heard. The vocals although are not fully understandable they do not dampen the overall feel to the album. Good start. "Suffering from Self Inflicted Wounds" is not even two minutes long, so it is hard to take much from it. The tempo and beat create more of a Blackened Thrash melody, which works really well. I wish it had progressed into a longer song.
"Do You Hear Them Howling?" really has the EMPEROR and DARKTHRONE feel to it, vocally and instrumentally both take different styles form both and molded into a sound of their own. The melody created ticks over really well, the skills and composure shown allow a great depth into the EP. This song allows the band to show off potential sound, it certainly hits required. A few more songs like this would make a great album. "Bite It You Scum" has been covered before by CKY, but most people who have heard the original will be interested to see what will be done with this one. Keeps to the original stance of GG ALLIN, which makes the song really work. It's a fast paced, hard hitting Punk style that really does justice to the cover.
"In the Pines" does not work as well as the "Bite It You Scum" cover. The sound doesn't do the song or the band justice. Sounds more like a weird ass Bluegrass drunken Doom song. Not the ending to the album it deserved.
A good release. Mix these styles within a full-length album and they will ne onto a winner. Really enjoyed the GG ALLIN cover, good touch. Stand out song is "Do You Hear Them Howling?", an album like that will certainly score highly
