Sign of Myself
Peter H. Nilsson
There are some musical works that are established under the name of one central musician. And on these occasions, is usual to see the focus of the work on the instrument of the head of the project. But it's common to see some musicians using this aspect to express songs as a whole, and not only as a show of self-indulgence. This last idea shows what the listeners will find on "Sign of Myself", the new work of PETER H. NILSSON.
The album shows a form of AOR/Arena Rock that was usual during the entire 80's (and that was used many time on films' soundtracks), melodic and accessible. But on the hands of the quartet, the old genre gains a new life, with excellent catchy melodies and choruses, charming arrangements (especially on the tender ambiences created by the keyboards' parts). It's almost impossible to resist to such excellent set of songs, filled with a personal and great energy. It's truly very good to hear such musical genre being played today, creating a link between the 80's and the actual days. The production is signed by Peter himself, having the mixing and mastering done by the hands of Thomas "Plec" Johansson. And the result is a modern update for the same way used back in the 80's to do the studio works for this specific musical genre: clean, defined and with everything on its due place. It's almost perfect, indeed.
All the songs of "Sign of Myself" are very good, and will take the mind of the older fans back to a time where worries and hardships were erased during the night, when music and happiness reigned supreme: the 80's. But the best ones for a first time on the album are "Fire and Thunder" (a typical hit of the 80's, but shaped for our modern days, with charming arrangements that are easy to assimilate, very good vocals and great chorus), "Time to Remember" (keeping the same elements of the previous song, it's a bit more silk and tender, but with a very good work on the guitars), "Can't Get Over You" (a nasty touch on the band's work is presented on this song, even with very good keyboards creating a charming ambience), "Sign of Myself" (the right song to be a radio hit on 1985-1986, again with very good vocals, but presenting a good work on bass guitar and drums), "Breathe" and "The First Time" (an instigating set of melodies inherited from some Pop bands of the 80's can be heard can be heard on these two songs, and the guitars are doing a very good work). But the entire album is very good, indeed.
For those that like melodic and tender music and just want to experience a good time, "Sign of Myself" is the right album. I should indicate it for those that are suffering from terrible inner feelings due the pandemic as well, due the injection of a happy and uncompromised ambience of the album.
