Personal Signet
PERSONAL SIGNET is a Progressive Metal/Rock band formed in 2007 and based out of the Czech Republic. To date the band has released a debut EP and a full length album. This is their second full length, and contains eight tracks.
"Give Me Reason" is the opening song. It has a jovial main riff and an upbeat energy overall. The distortion level of the guitars isn't overdone, leaving the style somewhere between Rock and Metal in my opinion. Most of the vocals are done mid-range but he can hit the uppers when the music calls for it. Though there isn't a ton of stuff going on in the background, the individual instruments work together tightly in unison. "Slaved for Nothing" has a discordant sound from chord progressions that connect on minor keys for the most part. However the vocal harmonies lay overtop in major keys, creating a really unique and pleasingly odd sounding song. In keeping with a dark theme, "Prisoned Mind" is a tentative and soft dark melody where the clean guitars sound like chimes blowing in the wind. As the bass guitar dances in the background, the echoes of the vocals remind you of being surrounded by a cloudy mist that you cannot escape.
"Out of this World" sounds exactly as it is entitled. It's a trippy piece that makes use of bold and unconventional methods of drumming, keys and riffing. Everything comes together so well here and this track is more on the Metal side, complete with a fitting guitar solo that extends the outer dimension feeling. "Man in the Shadows" opens with graceful piano that gives way to minor chords and a change in meter that is hard for the mind to follow. I have always maintained that any good Prog had to have certain element in particular... piano and meter changes are two of them. The identity of this track is inherently hidden which makes it that much more intriguing. "Heroine" sticks this mysteriousness but also maintains an accessibility that is pleasing to the listener. It slowly builds with more and more instrumentation and when the main riff hits it has an old school feeling to it, like it belongs in a few decades behind. "Paranoya" closes the album. This time the riff is right up in your grill and the ¾ time signature gives it a real energy, excitement and hard hitting memorability.
Overall I definitely liked the album. PERSONAL SIGNET's brand of Prog is uniquely theirs, as the band does not sound really anything like any of some of the major hitters in the genre. Their timing and musical prowess is strong and they have a way of imparting a suspenseful feeling in their music that just reels you in.
