Pathos

Path to Purgatory

Wow, what great mix between Melodic Death Metal, Melodic Black Metal and more is offered by this Portuguese quartet!

There are limits that can be eroded and new forms of Metal can come when such thing happens. No one is saying that you must be like this or that (well, some people are always saying it, but forget what they say), so you can break limits and try something different, and this idea is from where all Metal genres were born. And it seems that the Portuguese quartet PATH TO PURGATORY is trying something in this sense on “Pathos”, their first release. The production was done in an independent way (in other words, the band paid for it from their own money), and even with some point that could be better (a bit more defined and with some better instrumental tunes). But’s defined and has the weight their music needs. It’s not excellent, but’s very good (besides their music needs more).

Besides one could label them as a form of Melodic Death Metal, it would be fair with their music, because it bears many influences from Melodic Black Metal (the shrieks of the vocals show such tendency, and some melodic keyboards touches as heard on “Hallowed”) and some Thrash Metal elements. Their melodies can be said that inherited both from Melodic Death Metal and Thrash Metal as from traditional Heavy Metal as well, some Gothic Rock-like whispered vocals (pay attention on “Burn Away”) and their music is filled with excellent melodies (focuses on the guitars), great amount of energy and a different insight. It’s really excellent.

The singles “Purgatory”, “Return of the Fallen” and “Hallowed” came before the album (and are in the album as well), and along with “Vallhala Awaits”, “Burn Away”, “Behold Extermination”, “Fog of War”, “Fall Around Us” and “Where Angels Cry” will really bring these guys new fans, because their music is hard to resist due its melodic grasp. Many contrasts can be heard on their music, based on good technical insight, and the mass they create with very good guitar riffs (with melodic leads and arrangements), shrieks on the vocals and oppressive rhythms from bass guitar and drums, and it’s a bit different from the usual.

“Pathos” depicts that another earthquake is about to hit Lisbon, this time caused by PATH TO PURGATORY’s music!
