Sleeping Lions

"We named the album "Sleeping Lions" because that's what we feel like - we've been hibernating in our neon desert cave, licking our wounds and regaining our strength for the hunt," says OTHERWISE front man Adrian Patrick, who along with guitarist Ryan Patrick, form a sibling duo in this Las Vegas band. "Now we're back on the prowl again, and our eyes are wide open. The album title absolutely references a bigger awareness of who we are and what we're capable of. The last thing you ever want to do is wake sleeping lions."
Like their Las Vegas cousins THE KILLERS, OTHERWISE add in some very catchy vibes and sounds. Although this band is far rockier, there seems to be bit of the Nevada sound coming through. No more than on "Suffer" which is that KILLERS sound; poppy, big sounding Arena Rock. "Nothing To Me" is grand in design with sweeping melodies and LED ZEP orchestration in parts. "Weapons" drives along nicely in heavy Indie Rock style.
Adrian Patrick's vocals are really strong throughout and the whole sound is produced at a major league level. There is a touch of angst in "Weapons" but is melodic and easy listening Rock. "Crocodile Tears" has a good building feel and power ballad sections. There is an edge but everything is ultimately polished. It kind of reminds me of lots of bands I've heard on MTV.
The album finishes on "Bloodline Lullaby" which I can envisage being on MTV. It has great vocals, is catchy and sounds like a tone of other Modern Rock bands. Sounds great but not particularly original. It could do with being a bit more organic, like say the new Robert Plant stuff. The fact that Plant is nearly 70 suggests that some younger bands need to be a bit more creative.
This band have some great Heavy sounds and also cover the same area as say BUSH or THE KILLERS too. The playing and production is top-notch and it has a feel-good Arena Rock feel to this album. The band may be trying to go for the catch-all approach- Indie and Hard Rock but is polished. Not sure if this will work long term, but I think may be a more stripped back Indie or more gritty Hard Rock could be the way forward.
