Thanatos
Ôros Kaù
The project of CZLT (NEPTUNIAN MAXIMALISM), ÔROS KAÙ uses death metal and black metal to explore new spiritual territories through references to Goetia, Greek-Egyptian Hermeticism, Astrology, Magic and Austin Osman Spare's writings, among the other things.
Wrapped in a splendid painting by Daniele Valeriani, "Thanatos" is a reflection on death, archetype of chaos, destruction and transformation as represented in ancient cultures, a stage of purification and enlightenment through pain and loss. Once again, references to demons such as Baal and Marbas are mere pretexts, allegories that symbolize artistic freedom in perennial opposition to the dominant culture. The album has seven songs.
"Nephtys" is first. It's a very dense and thick sound, and the harsh vocals sound like they are coming from something that is not human. There are really only a few different notes in the song, but it is very effective at deadening the listener. "Let Neptune Strike Ye Dead" is shorter and faster, and heavy bass notes come from the bowels of the earth. The album so far is mostly about a deep, disturbing mood. "BAAL" is more messy...more chaotic. Not only doesn't it follow a conventional pattern, but it also doesn't have a central theme. It's loose, and unstructured, but still quite harrowing.
"Marbas" has some high-pitched screams to go along with the deep gutturals. The album is growing steadily thicker, like more and more branches coming to life underneath your feet. "The Arcana XIII: Dawn of the Red Scorpio" has desolate and desperate tones. Some of the vocals sound like they are coming from someone who is being tortured, while other sit around and watch helplessly. The length "BIOS-PHOS-METIS" closes the album. Things could not get any weirder, or more frightening. To me, it reflects the sounds of what a foul beast would be doing...growling, organizing, and killing.
Anyone who is familiar with Black Metal and I, Voidhanger Records knows that they are one of the most unique labels out there, and they are quite selective. Within the bowels of Black Metal, the pockets are deep. This is yet another excellent band on their roster who has a very unique sound. It is most harrowing, and even the thought of some of the songs is enough to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, or throw you into paranoia.Purchase Link:
