Organic - Carved In Flesh album cover

Northeastern Italy's ORGANIC is an up and coming act that revisits the gory glory days of Swedish Black Metal in the early nineties. They formed in 2013, about twenty years after said glory days, and recorded an EP the following year. "Carved In Flesh" marks the first full-length release for the brutal ensemble, showcasing an outpouring of aggressive riffs, unrelenting drums, heavy grooves, and well-constructed songs.

"Suffocate In Blood" opens the album by deploying the listener onto a battlefield scene before the band begins with a thrashy, but varied first track that is punctuated with a groove likely to induce an involuntary nodding of the head at the very least. The second song, "Shrouded In Darkness," starts with an understated exposition preceding a verse that has a hint of the Punk influence found in the music of their predecessors, especially in the drums. Structurally, "Frozen Meat Medallion," has smooth transitions interweaving complimentary sections with contrasting tempos, and the same can be said for "Carved In Flesh" and "From Beyond".

"Macabre Rites" was selected to be the teaser shared online in August, a good choice since it presents an aesthetically pleasing arc. A heavy, mid-tempo intro bleeds into a blast beat-propelled verse also containing a catchy riff and powerful grunts by Maxi Careri. This precedes a grimier, slower section that prepares the return of blast beats and the familiar verse before culminating in a more dissonant, diminished breakdown, completing the arc. The only other song that clocks in at over four minutes is "I, Soulless," the longest on the album-and one of the strongest. Again, the longer duration gives more time for the destruction to run its course with more nuance than what is afforded within the confines of the shorter tracks. The clean introduction and melodious guitar solo are novel attributes although the song employs many of the elements that are done well throughout the release- specifically, the oscillation between tempos, dissonant riffs, and smooth transitions. On the contrary, the shortest track links these two longer songs. "Der Fotzenknecht" is a minute and a quarter of pure testosterone, perhaps depicting the simplistic and impulsive character described in the translated title should one desire to look it up on Urban Dictionary.

"Carved In Flesh" is a solid full-length debut for the Alpine Black Metal outfit. While it does not reinvent the chainsaw, it is a well-written album fans of old school Swedish Black Metal will enjoy. Bravi tutti.<
